By any statistical measurement, there wasn’t a more dominating team than TCU last year. The Horned Frogs ranked in the top 10 in college football in the following categories: Scoring offense, total offense, rushing offense, scoring defense, total defense, rushing defense and passing defense. To quote broadcaster Verne Lundquist, “Oh my!”
What’s even scarier is that the Horned Frogs return 16 starters, after finishing 2009 12-1 and 8-5 against the spread. Andy Dalton who tossed 23 touchdowns last year is back to lead this team at quarterback.
As for Oregon State, they too are coming off an impressive 8-5 campaign, one that saw them finish one game out of the Pac-10 race. However for them to regain the success they had, they’ll need new quarterback Ryan Katz to step in for the departed Sean Canfield.
There are many reasons that TCU should be one of your Week 1 college football picks, but this maybe the most important one: As good as Oregon State has been through the years, they’re just 4-4 in the last two September’s. Expect a slow start again this year.

The first Saturday of the season will end with one of the most intriguing college football picks of the day: Mighty LSU of the SEC will kickoff against upstart North Carolina, Who’ve you got?
For LSU, if things are to improve, quarterback Jordan Jefferson needs to be better. Behind Jefferson, this passing offense finished just 97th in college football last season (181.8 yards per game).
Things won’t be easy against North Carolina, and against a swarming defense that returns nine starters off a unit that allowed just 16.9 points a game (13th in college football) in 2009. Of course UNC’s offense wasn’t anything to write home about last year either, scoring just 24 points a game. Will they be better in 2010?
They will be.
Look for this game to be low scoring, and come down to the fourth quarter. However, with LSU’s defense having to replace several starters, North Carolina will do just enough to get this victory.

While many people would tell you to make the Virginia Tech your college football pick, this writer will tell you the opposite. The Broncos come in with 21 returning starters, off an improbable Fiesta Bowl win over TCU. With eight months to prepare for the Hokies, Boise State coach Chris Petersen will leave no stone unturned, and Boise will win this game by a wider margin than most think.
